Esparto cheese mould band

Before plastic moulds, sheep and goat cheese took its shape inside an esparto cheese band: a braided strip wrapped around the curd and tightened with its cord. The weave left its pattern on the rind, the one we still recognise on traditional cheeses today.

It measures 130 cm long and 8 cm high. Use it to make cheese at home or as a decorative piece in the kitchen. More among our traditional esparto utensils.

Handmade by artisans from Jaén

Esparto is one of the fibres most closely tied to rural life in Jaén and southern Spain. This piece comes from an artisan workshop in the province, where it is braided and sewn by hand, strand by strand.
